Phonics

Children begin their Phonics journey at Phase 1 in EYFS and continue through onto Phase 6 in Year 2.

Staff follow the Letters and Sounds principles, using a resource called Phonics Bug to inspire lesson content. Lessons are interactive and incorporate writing as well as reading.

Children are introduced to new sounds at a pace and are made aware of the correct terms (such as digraph, split digraph etc.). The primary teaching is done as a whole class, with a second session taking place most days in Year 1 to support learners at their level of attainment.

Regular assessments take place to decide on what support is needed and where to target this.
