Welcome to Year 2

Maths

Our first unit in maths this year is place value. We have been using the Base 10 dienes to help the children understand the true value of a number. They can see how a number is constructed and deconstruct it in lots of different ways.  We also share a 100 square with the children regularly so that they can see the relationship between numbers of different sizes and the patterns that emerge.

Spelling

We have started looking at specific spelling patterns and these will change each week, depending on which group your child is in. Each week, the spellings will be on display in the classroom and we expect the children to use some of them wherever they can in their writing. They will also be tested on their words every Thursday, bringing new words home the following day.

Theme

Our work on explorers is really taking off! We have already looked at what it takes to be an explorer and have started looking at the adventures of Christopher Columbus. Lots of the skills we use in maths and English will be used within our theme work to ensure the children are getting lots of exposure to the skills they need to learn.
