Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

We hope the children have had a lovely summer break and are ready for an exciting first term in year 1.

The theme for this term is ‘Me and the World around me.’ We will be learning about where we live, our community. In science we will be learning about our bodies and how we grow. We are also teaching basic skills across the curriculum. Eg scissor skills, using a ruler.

Your child will receive a homework journal, a reading record and reading book from their class teacher. These are for you to do at home with your child. The reading books will be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A box will be available for your child to put their finished book and reading record in so that it is ready to be changed by Mrs Headley. We ask that you encourage your child to do this so that they pick up the routine.

The homework journal contains a variety of tasks that your child should try to complete. Your child can choose which order and when they are completed. Along side the homework journal, a copy of the week’s spellings and phonics sounds will be sent home for you to continue to practise at home. Your child will not be tested on these in school this term but we do encourage your child to practise them so that they are getting used to spelling rules etc.

We have a weekly PE session for each class and ask that your child brings their PE kit for the full week.

1G- Thursday morning   1W- Monday morning with Mrs Mearns.

Other staff working in Year 1 this year will be Mrs Mearns (1W) and Mrs Hardwick (1G) They will teach on Monday mornings.

Any questions do not hesitate to come and speak to us.

We look forward to meeting you all,

Miss Goodwin and Miss Whyley.
